Glendora celebrates Pride in the Foothills
Glendora’s first Pride event, Pride in the Foothills, brought over 200 people to Gladstone Park for an afternoon of celebration, community, education, and awareness.
Several community partners and groups participated in the Pride event, offering activities and educational opportunities for attendees. Plants 4 the People, a local non-profit founded on the idea that food has the power to heal, educate, and connect people, hosted a flower planting, and paint a pot or rock station.
First Christian Church hosted a butterfly craft and hydration station, and PFLAG, the first and largest organization for LGBTQ+ people, their parents and families, and allies, provided resources and education, along with stickers and face painting.
“First Christian Church was honored to be a part of Pride in the Foothills. We value being inclusive and welcoming of all, so we loved being part of an event that did just that," said Karen Davis, Pastor of the Church and Glendora Mayor.
The event concluded with a special musical performance from Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, America's first Trans Chorus. Artistic director Abdullah Rasheen Hall provided inspiring remarks about the importance of acceptance and spaces for all people, sharing their own coming out story before the group took center stage. The crowd was moved to tears during their set, joining the Chorus as they performed a powerful version of the Civil Rights song, "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me 'Round."
“Pride in the Foothills made us feel a part of the community we love and live in. We felt proud as residents of Glendora to be part of something that is so much bigger than we are. It made us feel like OUR city stands behind the statement LOVE WINS,” said residents and event attendees John and Jesse Martinez, pictured far left and far right, below.
“Glendora Forward was proud to organize the first ever Pride event in Glendora to highlight the communities’ inclusivity and embrace the LGBTQ+ members of our town,” said Jennifer King. “We hope this is the first of many Pride events to come!”
